Millions of homeowners throughout the country don’t know how to react to a home damage emergency. I was asking a couple of my friends the other day if they were actually prepared for a broken water pipe or an electrical fire. Out of five people, four of them said that they were prepared and knew how to handle the situation, but it didn’t take me long to realize that none of them actually knew how to handle a home emergency.

Here are five reasons why I strongly believe that every house should have an emergency home damage contractor’s list.

1. So that your home doesn’t suffer any more damage than necessary. If you have water leaking all over your bathroom floor and it’s plumber near me starting to run into your hallway and bedrooms, it won’t be long before other areas of your home will be damaged also. If you are prepared, the damage can be contained quickly and efficiently.

2. So that no one in your home gets injured. Could you imagine someone in your home panicking as they run through the slippery kitchen floor and fall? What about an electrical fire that gets out of control, but the smoke detectors don’t go off, because they don’t work anymore? This isn’t going to happen, if you’ve prepared everyone in your family to react without panicking.

3. So that there’s no need to panic, once you enter into a home damage emergency situation. One of the biggest causes for accidents and injuries and sometimes even death during emergencies is when people panic, because they’re not prepared properly. There’s no reason why you should be one of the next statistics.

4. Because you might not know how to make certain types of emergency home repairs. If you don’t know how to fix a broken or leaking water pipe, you’re going to need to have an emergency plumber’s phone number handy. This type of situation also applies to roofing, electrical, heating and air conditioning and other emergencies. If you know how to fix and repair all types of plumbing, but your family members don’t, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have these phone numbers available, just in case there is an emergency.

5. Don’t get robbed by emergency repair contractors. Part of making your emergency home damage contractors list, will be screening the contractors, before there is an emergency. You can ask them a few questions like, where are they located, what are their emergency repair hourly rates and are you available 24 hours a day. You’re not just going to want to have anyone on your list, make sure that you are satisfied with each one of them.

Last but not least, you should have a least two emergency contractor names, but I would prefer you to have at least three, just in case one of them doesn’t respond when you need them. Your list should contain at least three plumbers, three electricians, three heating and air conditioner professionals and three home emergency damage contractors. You should make a couple of copies and place them in different spots around your house for easy access, God forbid if there ever was to be some type of home emergency.
